Understanding WOTC’s Target Groups: Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) Recipient

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) Recipients

New hires who fall under one or more of WOTC’s Target Groups may make you eligible for a WOTC Tax Credit. Target Group #7 is the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) Recipient. SNAP dominated all target groups  in 2019 with  1,343,584 qualified certifications, or a total of 65.01% of all qualified employees qualifying under this category.

A “qualified SNAP benefits recipient” is an individual who on the date of hire is:

  • At least 18 years old and under 40, AND
  • A member of a family that received SNAP benefits for:
    • the previous 6 months OR
    • at least 3 of the previous 5 months.

There are almost 43 million people receiving SNAP benefits as of April 2020 according to USDA data.

In 2019 the state of Florida issued 97,430 Work Opportunity Tax Credit certifications. Nationwide Florida issued  4.71% of WOTC Tax Credits in 2019. Florida issued the most credits in the Veteran Receiving SNAP (1,733) and Disabled Veteran unemp. 6 Mo. (1,450), categories,  and was third overall for all Veteran credits. SNAP was Florida’s largest category at 76.10%.

CMS Says: Hello, yes work from home employees are eligible to participate in the Work Opportunity Tax Credit program. There are no restrictions as to where an employee must work. So it they could work in your office, building, outdoors or at home.
