Helping Your Employees in a Time of Crisis
Amy M. lives in Utah, which is pretty far from Boston. Still, the events of Monday’s bombing shook her deeply. It “was just a really hard day emotionally for me,” she explains. If you were Amy M.’s boss, would you have expected that a tragedy across the continent would affect her so deeply?

The Biggest Challenges Facing HR Today
Last week, I told you what it takes to be a conference speaker. This week, I want to tell you about some of the things I talk about when I am on the road. When a technology company brings its customers together, it’s called a user conference. They can’t just spend 48 hours talking about learning software and HRIS systems, so they bring me in for entertainment.

Man Brilliantly Quits His Job to Pursue Dream Job With Resignation Letter Written on a Cake

On his 31st birthday, Chris Holmes — now known to the public as “Mr. Cake” — decided it was time to quit his job as a Border Agency official at London’s Stansted Airport to do something he’s passionate about and would allow him to spend more time with this family. For Holmes, this meant pursuing a cake business called Mr. Cake and notifying his employers with actual icing on a cake.

Workplace Issues Now Grow on “Vines”; Why Employers Need a Policy More Than Ever
As I said in an earlier post, I’ll be speaking about Social Media and the Workplace, as part of WESFACCA’s “Day of Privacy” presentation later this week.  One of items I hope to touch on is the fact that with the proliferation of apps and social media, it is growing increasingly difficult for employers to catch up.  (Which is a shame, because those apps can prove invaluable during tragedies, like the Boston Marathon explosions).  Employers that are just catching on to Facebook, for example, are well behind the curve.

Tattoos Peek Out at Offices, but Only at Some
Even in the most torrid weather they’re part of her workday wardrobe in the employee benefits office at a Florham Park, N. J., insurance brokerage. This is how Ms. Thomas hides her tattoos: the inked images of the Virgin Mary and a dead girl crying bloody tears that fight for space on her right arm; the spider web that encircles her right elbow; the butterfly at rest on the inside of her right wrist; the rose in bloom on the inside of her left wrist.

The “Non-Employee of the Month”
What drives someone to wear a t-shirt like this to a shuttle launch? Just lost his job? Wishes he could retire and play video games all day? Is he a rebel at work and proud of it? Or is it some inside joke and I’ll never know the answer. Who knows – and I wasn’t going to ask him that question at 4am while waiting to get on a bus.

Helicopter parents crash into the workplace
I have  been somewhat bemused by the spate of   articles over the last weeks advising managers and recruiters how to treat helicopter parents in the workplace.  I do have to confess however, to quashing a particularly strong maternal urge last year to hop on the Eurostar to give my son’s boss a piece of my mind. At best he was a truly lousy manager, at worst a bully. You will be pleased to hear common sense prevailed.
